Maize Lethal Necrosis (MLN) is a disease that affects maize plants, characterized by the necrosis of leaves, leading to the premature death of the plant. It is caused by a combination of two viruses: the Maize chlorotic mottle virus and any of the potyviruses in the family Potyviridae.
MLN has been a significant agricultural challenge in Kenya, causing substantial maize crop losses and threatening food security. The disease first appeared in Kenya in 2011 and has since necessitated urgent research and the development of disease-resistant maize varieties.
