Growing mushroom as a

Are you interested in venturing into mushroom farming in Kenya?

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is excited to announce an upcoming training program designed to equip aspiring mushroom farmers with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in this thriving industry.

The training will take place at JKUAT’s Juja Campus on two separate sessions:

  • Session 1: April 9th to 11th, 2024
  • Session 2: April 23rd to 25th, 2024.

JKUAT has established a Mushroom Growing Resources Centre to support the rapidly expanding mushroom production sector. As the first Kenyan institution to develop certified mushroom seed (spawn), JKUAT aims to address the significant shortage of mushroom supply in the local market, as revealed by the university’s research.

The limited availability of certified mushroom spawn and the lack of consumer awareness about the health benefits of mushrooms have contributed to the insufficient supply. Mushrooms are a nutritious, cholesterol-free alternative to red meat, rich in proteins and minerals.

JKUAT has established a centre for mushroom research, training, and extension services to support the growth of the mushroom industry as an alternative cash crop and to enable farmers to export their produce. The university’s highly-qualified personnel provide expertise and resources to foster the development of this agricultural sector.

Mushroom cultivation is an attractive option for farmers, as it is not dependent on rainfall and requires minimal space for growing, allowing for diversification and increased income potential.
