Livestock

Livestock refers to domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce labor and commodities such as meat, eggs, milk, fur, leather, and wool. The term is often used to refer specifically to those bred for consumption, while others are used for draft or non-food resources.

In Kenya, livestock is a crucial component of agriculture, contributing significantly to the rural economy, providing food, income, employment, manure, and transport. They are integral to the livelihoods of many Kenyans, especially in pastoral communities.

Examples:

  • Common livestock in Kenya include cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, and pigs, each serving distinct roles in agricultural and economic systems, from providing high-protein food sources to creating opportunities for trade and business.
  • The integration of livestock with crop production can enhance the recycling of nutrients and provide a more resilient farming system against climatic challenges.

Effective livestock management involves practices that ensure animal health and welfare, optimize productivity, and minimize environmental impacts, thereby contributing to sustainable agriculture and food security.
