Coffee

Coffee is a key agricultural product made from the roasted seeds, or beans, of the coffee plant. It is one of Kenya’s most significant export commodities, known worldwide for its high quality, distinctive taste, and aroma.

The coffee industry is a major contributor to Kenya’s economy, providing income for millions of people, including smallholder farmers and those involved in processing, marketing, and export. The ideal climate in regions like the Kenyan highlands offers perfect conditions for Arabica coffee, which is highly valued in the international market.

Examples:

  • Kenyan coffee is often grown in mixed-farming systems, integrated with food crops and livestock, which helps in sustaining the smallholder farm households.
  • The country’s coffee is esteemed for its unique flavors, often described as bright with a rich acidity, full body, and delightful fruity undertones.

Promoting sustainable coffee farming practices can enhance productivity, environmental sustainability, and profitability. Initiatives like fair trade and direct marketing can also provide better income opportunities for coffee farmers, ensuring their economic stability.
